Roma 2-1 AC Milan (3-1 agg): Rossoneri crash out after another dire display

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan’s Europa League run was ended at the quarter-final stage as they lost the second leg 2-1 against Roma, meaning they crashed out 3-1 on aggregate.

Roma seized absolute control of the tie with two early goals. The first came when Gianluca Mancini – who scored the only goal in the first leg – reacted quickest to a rebound off the bar to fire in, then Paulo Dybala’s excellent curling strike doubled the lead on the night.

Mehmet Celik saw red for a nasty challenge on Rafael Leao and yet Milan just could not make the man advantage count in the remaining 60+ minutes. The only goal they managed came via Matteo Gabbia’s late header in an otherwise dreadful performance.

The result means that Roma advance to the final four of the competition where they will meet Bayer Leverkusen, with Atalanta getting past Liverpool on the other side of the bracket.

Stefano Pioli made seven changes from the side that drew with Sassuolo. Mike Maignan returned in goal, Davide Calabria, Matteo Gabbia and Fikayo Tomori returned to the defence, Ismael Bennacer rejoined the midfield, then Christian Pulisic and Olivier Giroud returned to the attack.

The first big chance of the game yielded the first goal, and it was Roma who took a firm grip on the tie by taking a 1-0 lead on the night. A prolonged spell of possession inside the Milan half ended with Mancini offloading to Pellegrini who shoots from the edge of the area and hit the post. Bennacer and Calabria were asleep on the rebound, and Mancini pounced to fire into a virtually empty net.

There was a scramble in front of the Roma goal in the 17th minute when Tomori was held back while going to try and stab home a loose ball, and yet Marciniak blew for a free-kick to Roma for a foul by Gabbia on Smalling.

Not long after it was very close to being 1-1 on the night when the ball reached Ruben Loftus-Cheek in behind the Roma defence after a good bit of work by Musah down the right, yet the Englishman saw his shot deflected up onto the crossbar before being cleared. From the resulting corner, Gabbia rose highest with a glancing header that just evaded Leao’s run at the far post.

A minute later, Milan were made to pay as the home side made it 2-0 on the night. Lukaku won a one-on-one against Gabbia who was sent flying and the Belgian tried to centre, but it was blocked to the feet of Dybala who found the far corner with a precise whipped shot.

Just after the half-hour mark, there was a potential turning point in proceedings as Celik was sent off. Leao went past him with speed and the Giallorossi defender lunged in from behind making contact with the Portuguese winger’s Achilles with his studs. Marciniak had no doubts that he prodcued the red card.

A period of pressure naturally followed for Milan, and they caused panic inside the Roma box through a run from Theo who beat three opponents and fed Leao, but Loftus-Cheek’s header in the middle of the area from his cross hit the back of Spinazzola.

Five minutes before the break Pioli made his first change as Luka Jovic came on for Bennacer, and then at the break two further substitutions arrived with Samuel Chukwueze and Tijjani Reijnders replacing Calabria and Loftus-Cheek.

The opening exchanges of the second half went as expected, with Roma committing men behind the ball and trying to limit the space available to Milan.

They did provide some threat on the counter-attack, such as when Spiazzola went on a darting run and found freedom to lash a shot into the side netting with Maignan diving.

In the 65th minute it really could have been 3-0 to the home side. A spell of prolonged possession saw El Shaarawy find the substitute Abraham, who had a first shot blocked by Gabbia and then spooned the follow-up over the bar.

The last two changes came for Milan in the 69th minute with Pulisic and Musah brought off for Noah Okafor and Alessandro Florenzi, all while the Rossoneri continued to launch hopeless and inaccurate crosses into the box.

The goal that did come for Milan in the 86th minute was too late in the end. A nice cross from Leao found the near-post run of Gabbia who beat everyone to the ball and finished with his head.

In the dying embers Chukwueze tried his look with a nice left-footed shot from outside the area. Svilar parried it clear, but there was nobody there for the rebound.

The final moment of note came when a red card was flashed towards Theo Hernandez for a foul to stop a counter-attack, yet the referee was called to the monitor and it was rightly overturned.

  1. This man time is up….this is the icing on the cake, De Rosi knows what it means to wear the jersey and play for Roma…I bet you if Gattusso were on Pioli shoes, he would rather die than loose both legs….this man knows nothing about what Milan means…..he needs to go back to Lazio and fiorentina….

    1. To be fair the players didn’t show what it means to wear Milan jersey as well. No urgency. No team sacrifice. No extra miles. That’s why you need a piece of history in this historical club. Not a modern money ball kind of balderdash.

      1. That’s why we need to work our kids in. Enough with the random foreign imports. Let Simic, Bartesaghi, and Zeroli play. There are others too. Start integrating them now and sprinkle in some targeted signings where needed. If we get a good core of 5-6 Italians raised at the club the mentality will be different.

        1. This. Mercenaries don’t care for the shirt. No passion. No passion on a bad day looks like how we played yesterday. Roma players fought – unlike Milan players. Roma wanted to win. That’s what made the difference. And DDR’s tactics over Pioli’s (lack of) tactics. A novice beat “The Wizard” Pioli 100-0. Time to go. Pioli is out of tricks.

  2. Pioli: Milan need clarity.
Proceed to play the most confusing and dreadful performance of the season.
I’m clapping and vomiting at the same time. Congrats.

  3. Gonna say something and end it. Pioli has flaws, but one of the biggest is the fact that he’s not able to pull Leao and get him to be part of the team. There’s no high pressure, if you have this guy that doesn’t press, doesn’t challenge for 50-50 balls, doesn’t get his leg stuck. F**k the assist.
Other than that, Leao played like shit, and he wasn’t the only one.
Musah was a crap buy, high salary and 20 mill price, are you kidding me, I’ll take Krunic 100 times over. Big mistake to start him in midfield, between him and Bennacer we had 0 filter. It was almost like the first semifinal game against Inter where we lost 3-0, only that Roma wasn’t pressing as much and sitting deeper and still able to attack as they wanted.

At this point, I’m almost tempted to say bring Conte, or any other coach with balls to get Leao or anybody else glued to the bench if you don’t perform.
I don’t care if Pioli is loved by his players, the performance of everyone was dreadful … in a quarterfinal…

Oh and Pioli, I’ve defended him till now, not anymore. He finished the credits with me, to not be able to score one goal for 85 min against 10 players is unforgiveable. I have no problem with losing to Roma, but that sense of confidence and superiority to Roma was so wrong and really not what the team needed. All Roma players ran themselves to the ground, and here we had players that instead walked on the field.
Forget about the derby, from what has happened so far it will be a loss, just pray that it’s not a huge loss. With 0 midfield filter, the game will probably be over before half-time.

    1. Forget about the derby? Well, it’s impossible as there is a 0-5 trashing waiting for us. Inter will annihilate this team completely. At least no one will be asking to spare Pioli after that.

  4. Such a waste againts 10 man..musah and bennacer should come out earlier in first half. Giroud also need to come out. RLC should maintain to at least create possesion into the box. Its a wrong tactical from pioli for bus defence system of roma.

  5. Musah has been out of his control for the whole season.
Leao is just like Cassano said, he is unable to give out sustainable in particular when the team is having troubles, he is poor in 1v1
Guess we are get another lesson from the incoming derby game.
Hope the next coach will bring some quality to evelate our performance in big games, we are soft and inconsistent, sometimes numbling in big matches like this.
    Forza Milan.

    1. This is what I wrote, no cuss words, and if I had anything blocking it I wouldn’t be able to post. It’s just that this site doesn’t parse well long posts..

  6. Fuckkk pioli he cannot coach a team i swear! He is a bad coach for AC MILAN one of the best club internatonal and in the league. It is disrespecting milan what pioli does, my tactics and a plan how to play is very better than the punkass pioli i see everytime the mistakes HE make to his players and the way they play

    1. First rule of Pioli Ball: Once you reach the opponent’s penalty box, start passing the ball sideways and backwards until the opponent hijacks the ball. Rinse and repeat.

  7. 1. LEAVE PIOLI IN ROME.
    2. SACK FURLANI. THAT GUY HAS BEEN PUSHING TO KEEP PIOLI SINCE LAST WINTER.
    3. DO NOT TAKE INTERVIEW FROM SMART MOUTH PIOLI. HE WILL SAY SOME PHILOSOPHICAL SH*T. THAT’S THE LAST THING WE WANT TO HEAR – PHILOSOPHICAL SH*T COMING FROM HIS MOUTH

LASTLY, BLOCK BOULDEN FROM THIS SITE FOREVER.

  8. Musa in the field means we play with only 10 players and calabria moving to the midfield just means we play with 9 … also having Giroud start thats another 1 less player … why the hell are you defending at the beginning of the game !

  9. This is unfortunately what I expected at the beginning of the season. Pioli is/was the problem. His mediocrity was on display the past few matches for all to see.

I would rather have an unproven coach with positive behaviors than an experienced one with poor behaviors like Pioli.

  10. It’s time.
    It’s the end.
Let’s part ways amicably at the end of the season.
Give the kids some minutes and let’s say our goodbyes.
Mister is done. Gerry knows it, he knows it, Ibra knows it, we all know it.
    Forza Milan

  11. I was being told by @Poli back in June that Milan is in safe hands, now that Maldini and Massara has been sacked and we are going to win the treble.

Where is coward @Poli? Does he have the guts to come out of his cave? Now that Maldini and Massara, aren’t here.

    1. Man that name brings lots of memories. Haven’t heard from him since this new and winning management lost Thuram. Well maybe he just post with another ID. Can think a name or two with the same behavior..

      1. Basically a double faced coward, who doesn’t even have the guts to defend his words and shift sides.

BTW who are those names, that you suspect to be @Poli? Asking just out of curiosity.

  12. So Mr. Pioli, why yet another lackluster performance? We lacked clarity, were less clinical or were the stars just misaligned? What was it this time that made us look like a toothless amateur team? Who was the culprit? (I really hope that this is the last season with him at the helm).

  13. One word: Disorganized. And if there’s the most important job of a coach, that’s to organize his team. I can’t start to imagine if we play like these recent matches against Inter. Not only they’ll celebrate their 2nd star in the derby, it can get even worse.

Many said what if and what if on the 1st match. Denying an extremely vivid disorganized team performance. So what’s the excuse now? What if Roma didn’t score the goals? What if Kaka still playing for us? Just accept the fact and move on (with changing the head of this team somewhere along the way).

  14. Bet builder tip for Monday
    Match result Inter Milan
    Over 3.5 goals
    Martinez to score anytime
    Theo Hernandez to get booked
Mike Maignan – Over 1.5 goal keeper saves
    Combined odds 20/1
    Good luck guys

  15. After this game I’m joining the Pioli out. This loss was 100 percent on him. De Rossi didn’t even need tactics to win this game.

  16. Losing to a brand new manager because you were too stubborn to change your one dimensional tactics for 180 minutes is inexcusable…

      1. You’re totally right. This man has been using a tactic to not have any tactic. Loftus-Cheek as AM/10, Kessie before that, Tonali and Bennacer but not Diaz. De Ketelaere or Pulisc who plays there for NT. I bet if we got Dybala then Pioli would still play Tomori there, so there is no need of any tactics. Secret to Pioli;s game: good GK, healthy CBs as there is no strategy in defense as well, no 9 for tap ins and 1 or 2 wingers can do whatever they want. Essentially – GK, 8 players doing good knows what and defend a bit and 2 players doing whatever they want.

  17. Read the comments and each one has merit, this Monday will be Pioli’s last game , the question we must ask is are our losses his fault or the players, I believe they are equally responsble. As an example I took a lot of heat saying Leao was a lazy player….Rafi is a victim of his own greatness, Pioli has to be nice to him so he does not request a transfer, sorry get rid of him…. Theo needs to be moved to midfield , we are wasting his talent in the back. Observe how DeChamps uses him. As to the Derby, gonna bet on the Rossoneri against better judgment as odds will be high. The issue overlooked by many is Inter with a win guarantees the Scudetto….so they will be high as kites . Alot riding on this game. FORZA A.C.

    1. If Inter lost the derby, that’s probably Suning betting against themselves so they could make a few quick bucks to pay off the debts lol.

Afterall, what’s wrong with waiting for another week, and helping to ensure that your neighbour will not sack their beloved coach..

    1. Check the other articles. Miiiillions of post about how awesome Pioli is and how pathetic every fan – excluding him of course – is.
